Efficient query execution on broadcasted index tree structures

The continuous broadcast of data together with an index structure is an effective way of disseminating data in a wireless mobile environment. The index allows a mobile client to tune in only when relevant data is available on the channel and leads to reduced power consumption for the clients. This paper investigates the execution of queries on broadcasted index trees when query execution corresponds to a partial traversal of the tree. Queries exhibiting this behavior include range queries and nearest neighbor queries. We present two broadcast schedules for index trees and two query algorithms executed by mobile clients. Our solutions simultaneously minimize tuning time and latency and adapt to the client’s available memory. Experimental results using real and synthetic data compare results for a broadcast with node repetition to one without node repetition and they show how a priority-based data management can help reduce tuning time and latency.     

Internet vs. paper and pencil administration of questionnaires commonly used in panic/agoraphobia research

The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of Internet administered questionnaires used in panic research. Included were 494 people who had registered for an Internet-based treatment program for panic disorder (PD). Participants were randomly assigned to fill in the questionnaires either on the Internet or the paper-and-pencil versions, and then to fill in the same questionnaires again the next day using the other format. Results showed largely equivalent psychometric properties for the two administration formats (Cronbach’s α between 0.79 and 0.95). The results also showed high and significant correlations between the Internet and the paper-and-pencil versions. Analyses of order effects showed an interaction effect for the BSQ and the MI (subscale Accompanied), a main effect was identified for ACQ, MI-Alone, BAI and BDI II. However, in contrast to previous research, the Internet version did not consistently generate higher scores and effect sizes for the differences were generally low. Given the presence of an interaction effect, we recommend that the administration format should be stable in research across measurement points. Finally, the findings suggest that Internet versions of questionnaires used in PD research can be used with confidence.     

Business owners' action planning and its relationship to business success in three African countries.

A model of business success was developed with motivational resources (locus of control, self-efficacy, achievement motivation, and self-reported personal initiative) and cognitive resources (cognitive ability and human capital) as independent variables, business owners' elaborate and proactive planning as a mediator, and business size and growth as dependent variables. Three studies with a total of 408 African micro and small-scale business owners were conducted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Structural equation analyses partially supported the hypotheses on the importance of psychological planning by the business owners. Elaborate and proactive planning was substantially related to business size and to an external evaluation of business success and was a (partial) mediator for the relationship between cognitive resources and business success. Filaments for Incandescent Lamps with Energy Conserving Envelopes

The design considerations for filaments in energy conserving incandescent lamps are described. Such lamps require compact high emissivity filaments to absorb infrared radiation reflected from heat mirrored focusing envelopes. The relationships between the electrical parameters in the radiation returning environment and in the clear surroundings are developed. Efficiency experiments with filaments of various geometries under conditions of radiation return were performed. A highly compact coiled coil filament seems most promising for development. A calculation is presented of the filament emissivity as a function of spacing of the windings in a coil. Measurements of the emissivity as a function of the pitch of a coiled coil filament agree with the calculation.     

Proteins Marking the Sequence of Genotoxic Signaling from Irradiated Mesenchymal Stromal Cells to CD34+ Cells

Non-targeted effects (NTE) of ionizing radiation may initiate myeloid neoplasms (MN). Here, protein mediators (I) in irradiated human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) as the NTE source, (II) in MSC conditioned supernatant and (III) in human bone marrow CD34+ cells undergoing genotoxic NTE were investigated. Healthy sublethal irradiated MSC showed significantly increased levels of reactive oxygen species. These cells responded by increasing intracellular abundance of proteins involved in proteasomal degradation, protein translation, cytoskeleton dynamics, nucleocytoplasmic shuttling, and those with antioxidant activity. Among the increased proteins were THY1 and GNA11/14, which are signaling proteins with hitherto unknown functions in the radiation response and NTE. In the corresponding MSC conditioned medium, the three chaperones GRP78, CALR, and PDIA3 were increased. Together with GPI, these were the only four altered proteins, which were associated with the observed genotoxic NTE. Healthy CD34+ cells cultured in MSC conditioned medium suffered from more than a six-fold increase in γH2AX focal staining, indicative for DNA double-strand breaks, as well as numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations within three days. At this stage, five proteins were altered, among them IQGAP1, HMGB1, and PA2G4, which are involved in malign development. In summary, our data provide novel insights into three sequential steps of genotoxic signaling from irradiated MSC to CD34+ cells, implicating that induced NTE might initiate the development of MN.     

Comparing Google Scholar and ISI Web of Science for Earth Sciences

In order to measure the degree to which Google Scholar can compete with bibliographical databases, search results from this database is compared with Thomson’s ISI WoS (Institute for Scientific Information, Web of Science). For earth science literature 85% of documents indexed by ISI WoS were recalled by Google Scholar. The rank of records displayed in Google Scholar and ISI WoS, is compared by means of Spearman’s footrule. For impact measures the h-index is investigated. Similarities in measures were significant for the two sources.

Determination of the antioxidant capacity: influence of the sample concentration on the measured values

The aim of the present analysis was to study the influence of the sample concentration on the measured antioxidant capacity, since such investigations are scarce but necessary to ensure the reproducibility of the results. Pure substances (ascorbic acid, gallic acid, Trolox^®, uric acid) and food extracts (strawberry nectar, tomato extract, white tea) were analysed using seven common antioxidant capacity assays (three versions of Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, TEAC; ferric reducing antioxidant power, FRAP; photochemiluminescence, PCL; oxygen radical absorbance capacity, ORAC and total phenolics assay). For all applied pure substances and in most of the assays effects of the sample concentration on the measured antioxidant capacity were observed. Since it remains speculative how sample concentration does affect the measured antioxidant capacity exactly, it is strongly recommended to use at least three sample concentrations for analysis to detect and to discuss concentration-dependent effects.
